Sometimes, You Need A Happy Meal

I can hear the Sorting Hat now: "Bee in your bonnet, Virgin?"

The bee in my bonnet is the word, "pity."

Since I can’t empty my thoughts via wand and toss them into a Pensieve for all to see, I suppose the computer will have to do.

Yesterday, I overheard something that planted this dang bee in my head (yes, I was eavesdropping.  But, honestly, is it really eavesdropping if the people are talking like they have megaphones stuck to their mouths?).

Anyway, they were talking about how they pity so-and-so for making some decision (I didn't hear what that choice was, since they were mid-conversation when I heard them).  This reminded me of something a fellow virgin once told me: "Even when people say they respect and support us, they're also feeling sorry for us because to them we're not really living."

Then the whole self-help bookstore jab from the other day stung my brain repeatedly.  Maybe she, a.k.a the spawn of satan, really thinks I need the self-help section.  Maybe all her venom is really a form of twisted pity.  I know, I know, consider the source, but still...that crud stings.

Naturally, my brain bee began buzzing around this idea of people patting me on the back then turning around and thinking, "Oh, you poor thing."

I reckon some people think I'm wasting my life and my youth.  Can't honestly say I haven't felt that way sometimes...especially on birthdays and National Holidays (except for Vomit-Valentine's Day--it's just a cruel, pointless day all the way around).

I'm not trying to throw a pity party or anything. Not my style.  I don't pity myself.  I made this choice and I stand by it--the good and bad of it.  It's just that sometimes I do feel the sting of time, lost time.

There are some things that help when a brain bee goes buzzing: like revisiting your childhood. And that meant a trip to McDonalds.  There, right by the order box, was a big sign for the current Happy Meal toys...SMURFS! I loved the Smurfs when I was growing up! It was a no-brainer.  I was gettin' me a Happy Meal. Laugh if you must--I certainly did. :)

So, what Smurf did I get on this day?  Panicky. The virgin gets Panicky Smurf. Seriously, how can you not laugh?! Fate certainly has one helluva sense of humor.  He's the cutest little thing, though! I'll have to get a picture of him and post it--his expression is priceless...and, actually, a little familiar.

  1. The idea of pitying a woman because she hasn't had some "thang" up her coochie is pretty silly. Pitying someone for not having found love makes more sense, but it's not just virgins who are waiting for that experience.

  2. I suspect that some of those who pity the state of still being a virgin are envious...you have what they'll never have ever, ever, ever again ;-)

  3. GB: It does seem silly, but, given the things I (and fellow virgins) hear, it also seems sadly plausible. Reckon it's a matter of not letting it get you down (enter Happy Meal fun)and just keep on keeping on, realizing, as you say, there are many, many people looking for real, true, honest love.

  4. Gorilla Bananas is right, feeling pity isn't wrong but it should be pity for the right reason. You said you made the decision and will take the good and the bad. People who decide differently than you have to take the good and bad with that too. What would you prefer? Someone who respects you for real, or risk the "use 'em and lose 'em" attitude?

  5. chocolateangel: :) You're sweet, thank you. My mom has said the same thing, even though it boggles my mind. Like my mama says, "The grass always looks greener." I guess there are benefits and drawbacks to everything in life.

  6. hahaha. panicky smurf...love it. I still get happy meals now and then with the kids. There is nothing wrong with that.

As for feeling the sting of lost time, I can see where you are coming from, but I sometimes wish I hadn't lost so much time on guys who didn't deserve me so there is a feeling of lost time no matter what you'd have done my dear. Besides I've never thought you were wasting your youth...hell you are living right? How is that a waste!? No worries sweet...get the fly swatter (they work on bees too) and get that thing gone!

  7. I adore your HP references.

Some people just pity what they don't understand. That's something to be pitied - a lack of an open mind and understanding.

  8. Brilliant! The only thing that could have topped a Smurf would have been a My Little Pony, but there is something about childhood toys that do make us feel nice.~

  9. Good God, I'd never feel pity on someone for a life choice that they had made, especially yours. I do feel pity on you if you like the smurfs though ;)

  10. Jay: :) Excellent point.

Jewels: As always, you make me feel better. And you are so, so right--my mom has even said I would feel like I had wasted time if I had been with guys who didn't deserve me. Sometimes, I think it's easier to think the grass is greener. I'm swattin' that fly!!!

    J. Day: :) I do love Harry Potter. :) Okay, you are so profound--and it was absolutely brilliant. You are so right--that IS something to be pitied. I'm calling you Dumbledore now. ;)

Kat: Awww, I LOVED My Little Pony!!!! There really is something about childhood toys that make everything better.

George: :) Thanks for that. And I'm so going to count your comment about the Smurfs as the drunken comment I didn't get over the weekend. ;)

  11. Okay, I just got caught up on the Barnes and Noble incident, and I definitely think you need to put that bi*ch in your "never think about it again" file. She's just a bitter woman that finds joy in other people's misery, especially when she's the one making them miserable. Ugh. People like that really make me wish I had the guts to just punch them in the face after offering a clever and biting response to their rudeness. Sadly, I'm far too chicken for that.

However, I'm glad you got a cool toy in your Happy Meal. The Smurfs can always make people feel better about life. :)

  12. I pity your choice being Smurfs! Seriously??? lol As for life choices, yours in particular, I suppose to some people, your choice to remain a virgin is difficult for them to comprehend. But don't let it bother you or get you down. You are standing by your convictions and your commitment. Let it roll off girle! Not worth your time or energy to worry about it.

  13. Candice: I'm definitely trying to put her far away in that file. Absolutely think you are right about her, though. Why else would someone act that way to people who are just living their lives? I actually get mad at myself for letting someone like that get to me even a little bit. Thankfully, Panicky Smurf brought the laughs. :)

Yvonne: I'll let it roll off. :) Aw, I like the Smurfs. My favorite cartoon of the day was Scooby, but I loved them all, really.

  14. People always pity other people. I'm pitied when people my age find out I don't drink or go out clubbing. Apparently I'm missing out. People can't seem to accept other people's lifestyle choices if it doesn't match their own. People are idiots so don't let them get you down :)

  15. i agree with what one the previous commenters said, we have something those that might be envious will never have again. even if you did lose time, you didn't lose it on someone who wasn't right for you -- always a plus.

and the happy meal thing is cute, except i hate mcdonald's. i'd take the toy though!

  16. I support you and most everyone else to live a full life as THEY define it. I have no expectations of you as long as you are happy. Even the whole Valentines day thing - You should be thrilled for folks who love giving and getting the roses and chocolates but never worry if it is not your thing. My wife doesn't care about all that stuff either and would much prefer to enjoy a walk with me than some formal fake celebration. Bottom line - you are NOT wasting your life, you are simply LIVING IT on your own terms. That is not only smart, but it shows incredible self confidence, patience, and self control that the rest of the world would be better off to emulate once in awhile. Great post that got me thinking - Thanks! W.C.C.

  17. Hazel: Reckon it really does come down to being comfortable with who you are, hope others accept you, and just keep moving forward even when they don't.

That 20 Something Virgin: Not wasting time on someone who wasn't the right one for you is a definite plus. Yeah, the toy is the best part of the Happy Meal...and the cute little box. Loved getting Happy Meals as a little one--I see I still do. :)

W.C.Camp: Thank you so much for taking time to comment--I can't tell you how much it means to me. All I can really say is 'Thank You.' I truly appreciate your kinds words. :)

  18. Frisky: Let that stuff just bounce off of you. No one knows your life but you. They are just unhappy because they made bad choices, while your choice is a wonderful one!

  20. 36 and not quite a VirginAugust 21, 2011 at 8:54 PM

Unfortunately, Chocolate is completely right. Pay attention to people who tend to be bullies and pick on others and they are usually the ones who come from a place of low self-esteem. I suspect it is some sort of psychological coping mechanism...just a guess.

As for your mom's advice about the grass being greener, think about it this way: If you are wrong, then you missed out on some fun in your life. Oh well. Not the end of the world. If you are right, then you have made a rare choice and will be able to give one of the greatest gifts you can possibly give a man. To say you are giving a man all of your heart is one thing, to back it up with action is something entirely different.

  21. 36 and not quite a Virgin: I'm awfully glad you commented--your comments make so much sense and certainly ease my mind. :)

  22. sigh. i'm a very proud person. and it's one of my worst qualities, but i really do hate it when people feel bad for me. i'd rather have someone come up to me and tell me they hate me rather than pity me. so i know how you feel. and i just want to tell you that i don't pity you. i admire you.
