Thanksgiving Should Be Interesting

First, I promise to catch up in the next couple of days. I was hit hard with a marathon headache today. Yuck.

Anyway, I've made what could be a terrible decision.

Since my mom hasn't been well, I've decided to cook Thanksgiving dinner.

Um...for the first time.

Now, Mom doesn't know this just yet...not entirely sure she will be open to this--she ALWAYS cooks Thanksgiving dinner and never accepts help. But I really don't want her to overdo; she needs to take it easy.

I'm not exactly a kitchen buff.

So, I'm hoping you will send me tons and tons of blog-support as I take on Thanksgiving dinner.

Did I mention I'm afraid of the oven?

Oh, Lord, help me.

Cheering section needed.

  1. Oh Honey! I don't know how much I'll be able to get online in the next couple of days... I'm cooking for 30+ for Turkey Day, so lots to do. (already started cooking) Add that in with my computer woes at the moment, and it makes for super limited blog time. I will try to help if I can, though.

First, how many people are we talking about? If it's less than 10, you can probably get by with just a good sized turkey breast, which is much easier to cook.

Afraid of the oven? How afraid would that be?? In your own opinion, what's the hardest thing you've cooked so far? Do you have a menu in place? What sides are you thinking about, and have you made any of them before? Sorry for all of the questions, but without knowing these things, I'm not sure how best to advise you.

Just in case I don't get the chance to pop back over here, I will wish you the best of luck and I'll throw in a few prayers for you as well... I will try to check in later today, but however it works out, I wish you and your family a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!

    Big Hugs,
    Martha

  3. You can do it...I couldn't...but you can! :-) I can't be of much help since I am kitchen challenged but I have all the faith in the world that you will be a huge success!

  4. You'll be fine. Your an intelligent woman, this is nothing for you to conquer.

  5. I'll totally be cheering you on! :D It's super cool you're helping your mum out, too. Even if it doesn't come out like hers, I'm sure she'll still love that you helped. :)

Though I'm not making all of Thanksgiving dinner, I'm in charge of the mashed potatoes.

    Mmm...potato-ey. :3

  6. I will send little turkey prayers for you on the big day. My mom doesn't typically let me help a lot . . . lol I'm a bit like Jewels, a wee bit kitchen challenged. Only God knows how I've been able to feed myself and not kill myself since I've lived alone. LOL

  7. Believe it's easier than you think. I didn't know how to boil water, and I was able to cook a turkey, so I'm sure you'll be too. If you answer some of Ruth's questions, it will be easier to help you out. For now, all I can say is consider cooking the bird in a bag (not just any bag though...), it makes the turkey much juicer and you don't have to baste it so often, so not so much contact with the big scary oven...lol

  8. Roasting the turkey is a breeze, and take it from me when I tell you that your mum can be super effective coaching you from teh sidelines.

For example: tell her how much it weighs and she will tell you how long to cook it for.

Have her be in charge of gravy if you are worried about that part. The rest of it is just prep work & timing.

    You'll be good.

Trust me, if I can do it, you can!!!

  9. Thank you so much everyone! I'm so nervous, I can't even tell you, but I'm totally determined.

Martha: It's for less than 10; my fear of the oven is more about the fear of getting burned and/or dropping something; I'm cooking my mom's annual Thanksgiving menu; everything is planned; the side include: Swiss green beans, sweet potatoes, cornbread, chocolate cream pie, and...Oh, Lord, I forgot. Thank you so much for your well-wishes--of course I'm sending the same to you and yours. :)

SSW: Thank you so much--I sure hope I can do this.

Jewels: You are a sweetheart! Thank you!

George: I feel like Wonder Woman reading your comment...minus the cool accessories.

Jen: Yum! Love mashed potatoes! I'm doing sweet potatoes. Annual dish. So help me if I screw this up.

    J. Day: LOL--I hear you! Thank you! I'll need all the good vibes I can get!

Alessandra: Thank you so much for the tip!!!! Never would have even thought of it! I'm so nervous!

MyJoyProject: My mom will definitely be my sideline coach. Okay, so not as bad as I think...I will keep repeating that to myself. Thank you so much!

  10. Be sure you take all the stuff out from the inside of the turkey. Be sure you coat the turkey with butter or something, or it will cook plain white. And good luck to you, I've no doubt you can do it!
